A family owned business differs from other businesses primarily due to the overlap of two different types of relationships-family and business-in one environment. While family owned businesses may have many advantages (e.g., closer contact with management, less bureaucratic structures, built in trust factors), they also have challenges that must be dealt with in unique ways. And while non-family businesses and a family businesses may suffer from similar problems (e.g., lack of effective corporate governance or audit oversight), and the solutions to those problems may be similar, the process through which those solutions are reached should look different.
